COEXIST.

DSC_6606.jpg

Every year, many of the animals admitted to our wildlife hospital are injured or orphaned due to unintended human impacts. As our communities grow and we share more space with wildlife, conflicts and hazards can arise — from vehicle collisions and lead poisoning to fishing line entanglement, cat attacks, and electrocution.

The good news is that many of these situations are preventable. This page serves as a resource to help our community better understand the most common human-caused threats to wildlife and what simple steps can reduce those risks. By learning how our everyday choices affect the animals around us, we can all play a role in creating a safer landscape where people and wildlife can truly coexist.

Lead Poisoning.

Lead poisoning is one of the most preventable threats facing eagles, hawks, and other scavenging wildlife. When animals are harvested with traditional lead ammunition, tiny fragments can remain in carcasses or gut piles. These fragments are often too small to see, but when scavengers feed on them, the lead can cause severe poisoning and death.

Lead-free ammunition offers an effective alternative that performs just as well while eliminating this risk to wildlife. By making the switch to lead-free options, hunters and landowners can continue their traditions while helping protect eagles, condors, and other scavengers that play a vital role in healthy ecosystems.
